Connecting With Your Child Through Self Care

February 2, 2023

Until I became a single mom I didn't realize the importance of self care. Parenting is hard. So many times, I've heard the old adverb, You can't pour from an empty glass. Two years ago, I quickly learned how true this was. My life has changed since being able to incorporate self care into my life. It makes motherhood a little easier, and me, a lot happier. Realizing what a difference this makes, I knew I need to start teaching my kids the importance and how to incorporate it into their lives. Here are some ways that I have started to incorporate self care into their everyday lives.

1. Family Vision Board - We did these last month, but they can be done at anytime. What do they want this year to bring? What are their current hopes and dreams? Use old magazines to have them cut their vision out. Grab some clue and a sheet of paper / poster board and let them lead the rest.

2. Sensory Play - After seeing this idea on Pinterest, I knew it had to be done. We started off with an idea for a dino theme. I went to the dollar store, picked up a dino set with small dinos and trees. I found some jewels and pebbles in the aisle over and we went home to start our project. I stuck everything on a tray and let my tiny tot play until she was ready to put it away. She stomped the dinosaurs through the mound of playdough and fed them trees. We now switch the themes out monthly.

3. Garden - When my son was smaller, he had a garden that we made into a dinosaur scene. There were small sections free of flowers that he could play in while taking care of his dino's shaded areas (watering the plants). 11 years later and that is one of his biggest memories. Now that I have my two-year old, they have a garden together. He helps her water her flowers and care for her fairy village that lives underneath the flowers (thank you Dollar Tree).

4. Yoga - My two-year old loves yoga. We do Mommy and Me yoga at least twice a week. There are quite a few sources for this and we do this at home. It's easy, fun, and so relaxing - for the both of us.

5.Create a Family Scrapbook - This is my favorite. I print several photos at Walgreens (look for discounts codes). We have a big box of crafts that has paper, rhinestones, feathers, etc. I purchased a 12 x 12 book from Michael's and this is my toddlers to do whatever she wants with. I love to watch as her creativity comes to life. Decorating "Papa's picture" is one of ehr favorite parts of this activity.

I think it's important to note I didn't incorporate these all at once. These are activities that have built over time. I encourage you to take your time and enjoy every little moment!
