They say “experience is the best teacher,” and we adhere to that at the Presidio San Agustín del Tucson Museum. Built on the northwest corner of the original presidio, the museum offers a variety of ways for families to learn about our interesting history through experiences provided in its Family Adventure Fourth Saturday and History in the Field Programs.

Family Adventure Fourth Saturdays

These interactive events are open to children of all ages but ideal for 4–7-year-olds and their families. Activities each month may include a tour of the Presidio Museum,  colonial-period games, a storytime, and much more! Other activities are also included each month based on the theme of the program for the month. All activities are included with regular museum admission and run from 10 am-1 pm.

April’s program will be held on Saturday, April 24, and will focus on farming and harvesting in the Tucson area. Dena Cowan, Presidio Museum Heritage Gardens Manager and Foodways Instructor, will join us for the event, which will include a variety of fun gardening activities including planting heritage seeds to take home and grow into beautiful plants.

May’s Family Adventure Fourth Saturday will occur on Saturday, May 22, and will focus on the daily life of Presidio residents.  Participants will experience both the fun and difficulty of chores during the Presidio era, including transporting water in buckets and roping our resident “cows.”  Plan on getting wet and having fun!

Family Adventure Fourth Saturdays are included in Presidio Museum Admission, which is $5 for adults, $4 for youth ages 6-14, and free for those 5 and under and Presidio Museum members. All activities occur from 10 am to 1 pm, and no pre-registration is necessary.

History in the Field

History in the Field is a new offering for youth at the Presidio Museum, which we have been hosting since February with a variety of themes.  The same theme is offered twice a month, but attendees need only attend one class.  In May, the museum introduces the new theme of Art. Participants will learn about the cultures and groups responsible for various art styles including petroglyphs. pottery, and Alebrijes (fantastical creatures made out of paper maché or carved from wood), You will learn about the materials used in traditional art such as clay, stone, and paper and even make your own art, which may include petroglyphs, clay figurines, or Chinese lanterns!

The cost for History in the Field is $5 per participant.  One adult chaperone is required to register, pay and attend the workshop for every four children. Pre-registration IS required at tucsonpresidio.com/history-in-the-field-youth-programs/.

To prevent the spread of COVID-19, all Presidio Museum visitors are required to wear a mask and social distance.  In addition, hand sanitizing is required upon entry.
