Macaroni Review: GloFish-A Tale of Two Aquariums

Experience the Glo with GloFish of your own!

By Sponsored Review by Kindle Rising, East Tucson Macaroni Kid Publisher November 17, 2016

It was soon to be the brightest of times. My daughters had been the happy owners of two Betta fish who had lived in small, somewhat dark, and very separate fish bowls. The fish were loved for several years until, alas, their little fishy lives recently came to an end. My daughters were very sad, and wanted more fish, but hadn't agreed on what kind of fish to get.

Just when we were starting to explore our aquatic options, we experienced a little kismet: I learned that GloFish was to be a sponsor of my Macaroni Kid toy preview party, and we would be getting not one, but TWO GloFish 5 Gallon Crescent aquarium kits, one to give away to a party guest, and one to keep if we wished.

We DID wish, and happily set up our new aquarium, including the Whisper® internal filter and a detachable LED blue light (suggested retail price of this kit is $70.00). We were very excited to learn more about the GloFish themselves, which are colorful, hardy freshwater fish that have a fluorescent gene that allows them to absorb and emit light. The fish are colorful in natural light and appear to “glow” under blue lights.

We headed to the pet store to pick out our new friends. GloFish varieties include Danios, Tetra, and Barbs. For a 5 gallon tank, it was recommended we choose 1 fish per gallon (with Tetras counting as 2 fish). There were six brilliant colors to choose from: electric blue, electric green, sunburst orange, galactic purple, starfire red and moonrise pink. We chose 3 colorful Danios (green, yellow and red) and one Galactic Purple Tetra. Barbs can get a bit aggressive, so we opted not to introduce a Barb to our little school.

GloFish are easy to care for and can be found at most pet store chains and many independent pet stores as well (find GloFish near you HERE), you can even order them on-line at www.GloFish.com!  My daughters could not be happier with their bright, cheerful new pets and the beautiful aquarium they live in!

And what of the other aquarium? You’ll recall it was to be given away at our party, where kismet happened again. One of our party guests was a 9-year-old boy who had broken his arm two days earlier, and was feeling blue about being out of sports for the rest of the season. When this child saw the GloFish at our party, he could NOT believe his eyes. He told us he had been asking for GloFish for months, and his mom confirmed this. When he learned there would be a giveaway, he didn’t dare to hope he might win…but win he did! He left the party to go pick out his very own GloFish, which, quite literally, brightened his day.
