Does your child show an interest in how things work?  Is she fascinated by flying machines?  Is he constantly throwing things and making them "fly"?  You may have a young aerospace engineer on your hands...or at the very least, a kid who would LOVE to fly a paper airplane on February 7th at the 4th Annual Great Paper Airplane Fly-Off at Pima Air and Space Museum.

In the main event, children ages 6-14 design, fold and throw their own paper airplane.  Children will compete in 1 of 3 age brackets and the winners will have their names on a perpetual trophy at the Pima Air and Space Museum.

Here is what else you and your young engineer can expect at the Fly Off:
  • Pilot Check In (receive your pilot’s handbook and credentials, plus a backpack!)
  • Photo Booth to take your official photo (fits in the handbook like a passport)
  • Build Area (featuring tips from Ken Blackburn, a Guinness World Record Holder!) and educators/volunteers to provide guidance on your airplane construction. Test Zone (practice makes perfect)
  • Plane Verification & Competition
  • Pilot Physical Training
  • Racing Simulator (Joe Gills Racing #18 simulator)
  • Hourly door prizes including family museum memberships. No charge to enter the drawings, winners must be present to win.
  • A paper airplane demonstration by Guinness-World-Record holder Ken Blackburn
  • A DJ and music throughout the festivities
This event is limited to the first 350 entrants.  There are still some spaces available, but registration closes February 4th, so register today!  On the day of the event, registered participants and up to 4 family members will have free admission to the museum!

A great way to prepare kids for this event is to attend the “How Things Fly” Soarin’ Saturday STEM program on the third Saturday of the month for kids age 8 and up. “How Things Fly” is a 90-minute hands-on program developed to teach kids about the science behind flight and is included with paid admission to the museum. The next class, taught by rocketry expert Chris Welborn, will be Jan. 17th at 1:00pm. Reservations encouraged but not required.
