Macaroni Review: Sofia the First~The Curse of Princess Ivy

The Tale of a Cute New Movie and an Adorable Princess Preview Party!

November 20, 2014
What do you get when you take a sweet Disney Jr. princess; a new villain; some fun party favors from Disney, a cozy local coffee house; lots of purple; and 12 cute little princesses?  Well, you get a perfect princess preview party, of course!

On November 16 I had the pleasure of hosting a preview of the new Sofia the First movie: The Curse of Princess Ivy at Brewd Coffee Lounge in Tucson.  We had a tea party fit for royalty, catered by Brewd and featuring AMAZING scones, turkey and cranberry pinwheels, some fruit and veggies and tea (of course), coffee (delicious), and lemonade for the littles.  I "Sofia-ed" the treats up with simple name cards made by gluing Sofia characters onto cardstock:  Sofia's Scones, Baileywick's Berries and Grapes, and Clover's Carrots, to name a few.  They were a hit!

Most of the young reviewers arrived in full regalia, and added MORE royal glamour with the paper crowns and tiaras that were provided by Disney for the party (you can find printables of tiaras HERE). I also printed out copies of Sofia's amulet on cardstock (link HERE), cut those out, and asked the girls to bedazzle them with glitter, which, of course, they were thrilled to do! They loved showing off in the photo booth area (thanks to Brand New Blessings Photography for taking such great photos of these little princesses)!

The girls also had a fabulous time coloring the Sofia printables I had prepared for them. In keeping with the theme, I put crayons and markers into purple paper cups wrapped with the Princess Ivy cup wrappers that were provided for the party! You can find these and other Sofia the First party ideas and printables on my Sofia Party Pinterest Board and on Disneyjunior.com.

The REAL highlight of the event was, of course, the new movie, Sofia the First: The Curse of Princess Ivy, which airs on the Disney Channel on Sunday, November 23rd (at 7 EST/6 Central.  Times vary from Tucson cable providers, so check your local listings for the exact time). Once the movie began the girls all gave it their rapt attention.  We had children from the ages of 18 months to 8 years, and they all loved it. One 4-year-old felt it was a bit scary (but she watched and enjoyed it nonetheless), but none of the other children were frightened at all.  They loved seeing the guest appearance by Rapunzel (although a couple of the older girls mentioned they wished they hadn't known Rapunzel would be in it...they would have liked to be surprised).  The children seemed to understand the overall message of the movie, that working together and making the right choices can help you accomplish your goals. Here are a few of the comments from our young reviewers:
  • "It was a sweet movie, it's one of my favorite Sofia movies so far!"-Clara, 8
  • "I liked the dragons!  Dragons are funny." -Audrey, 4
  • "I liked that Rapunzel was in it!" -Darcy, 5
  • "I liked Rapunzel's song."-Caitlin, 8
  • "I'm glad Sofia got her amulet back at the end." -Alexandra, 5
  • "At the end, Amber did the right thing to help Sofia." -Maya, 7

We had many, many royal thumbs up and the party ended with excited children who are ready to watch the movie again when it airs on November 23rd.  Among that group? This Macaroni Mama and her own little princesses!
