It's Time to DO SOMETHING GREAT!

Macaroni Kid Do Something Great Day Events, September 20 & 28!

September 18, 2014
On Saturday, September 20th (and several dates before and after), Macaroni Kid communities all over the country are working together to do something GREAT! From diaper drives to costume swaps to bake sales, we are "harnessing the power of Macaroni Kid" to support local and national charitable organizations.

In Tucson, there are three events happening in conjunction with Do Something Great Day!  I had put out a call for family "ambassadors" and was so excited when several women stepped up to the challenge to make a different here in Tucson!

Now it's YOUR turn to help out!  Your part is easy...you just need to buy some cookies, find a yard sale bargain, or take a walk!  VERY simple ways to DO SOMETHING GREAT!  When you DO take part in one (or all) of these great events, please let us know!  Use #MKDoSomethingGreat in your social media posts and share the inspiration to Do Something Great!

On September 20th, Ceci A. and a fabulous group of East Side moms are doing something GREAT by hosting a bake sale to raise money for Cookies for Kids Cancer. This is an organization that Macaroni Kid loves and has supported in the past.  All of the money raised goes toward research into treatments for pediatric cancers.  This is a worthwhile cause any time, but especially meaningful during Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month.  Plus ALL proceeds from this sale will be matched by the kitchen gadget company, OXO!
  • Come out for some delightful goodies at Bear Canyon Open Air Market (Cataline Hwy & Tanque Verde) between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20.  Bring all your friends!
  • Can't make it to the sale?  Donate directly to this event on-line here: https://supportcookiesforkidscancer.org/tucsonmakesadifference

On September 19th & 20th, Andrea R. is doing something GREAT by heading up a huge neighborhood rummage sale in the Peter Howell neighborhood. Families will be holding personal yard sales, but the neighborhood association will also have a community table to raise money for improvements to Alvernon Park.  Alvernon Park is a special park to this Macaroni Mama because I used to live in that neighborhood and we frequented the park often!  If you haven't visited the park, stop by!
  • Want to help support the neighborhood park and find bargains to boot?  Head to the Peter Howell neighborhood (SE of Speedway and Alvernon) on September 19th and 20th between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m.

On September 28th, Katrina Richman will be hosting a walkathon at McCormick Park (Columbus and Ft. Lowell) to raise awareness and funds for the Avielle Foundation. The Foundation was named in honor of Avielle Richman, who was killed in Newtown, CT at Sandy Hook Elementary School.   The goal of the Avielle Foundation is to prevent violence through brain health research and community education.  Tucsonan Katrina Richman is Avielle's aunt. In putting on the walkathon, Katrina hopes to raise funds for the organization, and to celebrate and honor her athletic, spunky, sweet niece.
  • Can you help support the Avielle Foundation Walkathon?  Come out to McCormick Park (Columbus south of Ft. Lowell) from 3:30-5:30 on September 28th to walk!
  • We could still use donations for the raffle.  If you have a gift certificate or other item you'd like to donate, please contact Katrina at kjrmjr@gmail.com
I have such appreciation for all of the great women who are reaching out to do wonderful things this September!  Please help them make a difference for these worthwhile organizations.

If you aren't able to participate in the official Do Something Great events, take a moment this week to reach out and help someone in need.  If you need some ideas or inspiration, read the stories of some local child warriors who are battling severe illnesses, posted HERE in Northwest Tucson Macaroni Kid.  If you are moved to donate to their causes, links are provided.

Please share the great things YOU are doing with us by using #MKDoSomethingGreat on your social media posts!  We are trying to make a difference, and every little act of "greatness" counts...if it's good, it's GREAT!
