Puzzle Fun with Uncle Milton & National Geographic

Wild for Puzzles! A Macaroni Review.

By Kindle Rising August 23, 2012
After a couple of weeks in the great outdoors (both day and night), this week our series of Uncle Milton toy reviews took us indoors with...puzzles!  We received two wonderfully photographed wildlife puzzles from Uncle Milton’s National Geographic collection, and my girls, both puzzle fans, were eager to check them out.

We tried the Pride of Lions Panorama Puzzle first.  This is actually 3 puzzles in one, with sections of 24 large pieces, 48 mid-sized pieces and 100 smaller pieces that can be done individually or put all together for a panoramic scene.  This was a great family activity, as my 2-year-old worked with the 24 pieces and my 5-year-old with 48 while I sat in the middle helping them both.  Had Daddy joined us, we could have easily tackled the 100 piece section as well!  Because the puzzle is almost all the same color (those lions have great camouflage in the tall grasses), I really had to encourage my girls to look at the shapes of the pieces to help get the pictures to come together, so it was a great problem-solving activity for them, too!

The 150+ piece Peacock Foil Puzzle (see photo at top) was a bit more challenging.  Recommended for ages 5+, my 2-year-old simply didn’t have the patience to work with the tiny pieces.  My 5-year-old loved the shiny, colorful foil and gave it a good effort, but this is a puzzle that is probably better not to try to complete in one sitting (at least if you’re a small child).  Unfortunately, we hadn’t set it up in a place we could keep it out, so we didn’t finish it this time, but I know both my daughter and I are excited to try again to see that lovely peacock completed!
