Hot Town...Cool Kids!

The steaming hot days of summer are officially here.  Lucky for Tucsonans, the summer evenings are not such scorchers, and there is plenty going on to keep the kids happy and cool as the sun goes down!  See below for some of the evening outings for families.  Note:  Subject to change, especially now that the monsoons have arrived.  Before  you go, please click the name of each event to be linked to contact information.  

Outdoor Activities
Summer Safari Nights at Reid Park ZooFridays from May 18th-July 6.  Cool off at the zoo!  Don’t miss an evening at the zoo in the cooler temperatures, with animal encounters, crafts and face painting for the kids. 5-8 p.m. $7.50/adults, $5/children 2-12. 
Friday Night BBQs at Tucson Racquet Club.  Weekly on Fridays through July 6, 5:30-8:00 p.m. Listen to live music, swim in the pool, and enjoy great BBQ fare.   $2 for non-members, free for members.  
2nd Saturdays Downtown. Monthly (remaining summer dates:   July 14, August 11).  Street performers, musical acts, outdoor movies, a children’s area and more. 4:00-10:30 p.m.  FREE.
Summer Saturday Evenings at the Desert Museum.  Each Summer Saturday Evening is unique with its own special theme (click the link to see this week's theme).  Weekly on Saturdays through August.  Discounted admission after 4:00 PM; special programming starts at 6:00 PM.  Admission after 4 p.m. is $7, $3 for children 6-12, 5 and under FREE. 
Night Wings at Pima Air and Space Museum.  Saturdays June 23, July 28 and August 25 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.  The museum remains open so that you can enjoy the aircraft in the cooler evening.  Lots of hand-on activities for children and adults alike.  Adults are $10/person.  Children 12 and under are free. 
Twilight Third Thursdays at Tucson Botanical Gardens. Thursdays, June 21, July 19, August 16 from 5  p.m. to 8 p.m.  Live music, art and a family-friendly hands-on art componant, such as salt-dough ornament making, paper mache and more.  Adults $9, Children $4 (members $5 and $3 respectively).  
Hot Fridays at the Tucson Botanical Gardens.  Fridays June 22, July 27, August 24 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.  Bring a picnic, find a shady spot and watch the sun set in the Gardens, then stroll the paths to see the nighttime flora and fauna!  Adults $8, Children 4-12 $4.  Members Free. 
Trail Dust Town.  Open daily all year long, Trail Dust Town is a worthwhile diversion for the whole family.  Train ride, wild west shows and a new ferris wheel, topped off with ice cream or another treat from the sweet shop make for a great summer evening.  Most Trail Dust Town attractions are open daily from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.  Ferris wheel rides are $2 and train rides are $2 for children, $3for adults.  Wild West shows are free (tips accepted).
Main Gate Square Jazz Summer Concert Series. Discover flavor, style and attitude as you listen to live jazz on Friday nights at Main Gate Square (University Blv. between Park and Euclid).  Dates:  June 1, June 15, July 6, July 20, August 3, August 17.  FREE.  
Titan Missile Museum's Moonlight Madness.  Tour the museum in the cool of the evening, and see the missile light up after dark.  Only 4 dates for this event in 2012:  Saturdays June 9, July 14, August 11 and September 8. Reservations are recommended.  Museum admission is $7 for adults and free for children under 12.  

Dollar Night at Skate Country:  Weekly on Mondays from 6-8 p.m.  $1 admission. 
Sky Bar Family Nights.  Tuesdays from 6-8 p.m. $8.88 cheese pizzas, educational astronomy show and live music.
Family Fun Time at Flandrau Science Center. Thursdays, 6-9 p.m. (also Sunday afternoons from 1-4).  Kid-friendly astronomy shows and “ipop” laser light show.  Adults $7.50, Children 4-15, $5.
